Duathlon National Race Report Richmond VI 4/26

Well here it is the race report from this past Sunday in Richmond Virginia....for duathlon nationals.

It was a tough one-it was hot, not just hot very hot 90+ degrees at the start of the 10k, I felt like I was being roasted most of the race. My age-group didn't start until 10:15 am so it was quite warm by then. I had a game plan of cruising the first 10K, going harder on the bike, and giving it all on the final 5k. Well my body had other plans for the day. The first 10k was going pretty well until I drank the ice cold water at the aid station-pretty quickly I got a bad side stitch. I kept my cool and relaxed and walked it out 30-45 seconds. It went away and I resumed running figured ok now I'll have to bike a bit harder to catch-up. I was in the process of doing that and had passed a number of girls in my age-group. About mid way I stood up to accelerate and my right calf cramped something horrible-I've never had this happen to me in a race, once during a track workout. I literally had to get off my bike because I couldn't pedal, I then stood on the side of the road and tried to relax my leg to see if it would go away. I think I was on the side of the road for about 3 minutes, but was able to get back on and ride. I had to ride a little easier to avoid my calf from cramping up again. I finished up the bike and started the last 5k, my calf was cramping and so was my stomach -needless to say I jogged and walked the last 5k...well at least it was short and not a 5k to end my suffering a little sooner! I ended up 16th in my age-group and felt good I didn't pack it in for a DNF (although I thought the calf cramp might have forced the issue). As for the crazy cramps the heat and maybe I'm a little low in magnesium, I don't think it was an electrolyte imbalance. I'm going to supplement with some magnesium for a few weeks to see if this helps in the next race. I've had a couple close calf cramps in a few workouts lately. Onto the next race Shamrock Du-and then onto the triathlons b/c I sure miss that swim and du's are really tough!

As for the rest of the group at Du Nats:
Mike my husband was right in there to qualify for worlds until the last run, where he couldn't take the heat anymore and ran a slow second run. Tough break to have the last qualifying race for worlds on such a hot day when we haven't had one. He finished 22nd in his age-group.

John McCarthy was doing great, but flatted on the bike. That stinks!

Our friends Tammy and Tara from NJ who we caravanned down with equally had a hard time in the heat, but both finished 13th and 22nd in their age-groups. Tara also had some calf cramps and stood on the side of the road like myself. Tammy actually had to wait for the freight train for 2-3 minutes on her first run along with about 70 other men and women. Didn't anyone check the train schedule? This is a national event last time I checked. Measuring the 5k would have been a good thing too.

Overall we had a good time and are all looking forward to the next race!
